Adios 2017, Hello 2018!
"Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties." ~Helen Keller
The end of the year seems to signal reflection and a hope to accomplish all those resolutions that we failed to accomplish over the past year. According to Forbes Magazine, 40% of Americans make resolutions each year! I am one of those people who set resolutions every year, 10 to be exact. My list is typical, lose weight, eat more vegetables, read more books, learn a second language, and travel more. The year begins with motivation and after March...well I'm not eating vegetables, I'm too busy to read a book, and who has the extra money to make an extra trip this year? Forbes also reports that only 8% of those who make resolution accomplish them. Happy to know that I'm in good company with the other 92% of well intentioned resolutioners!
Last year at this time, I was newly married and looking at sending my husband off for another long deployment. Honestly, I was too busy to think about making a long list of resolutions. So I began 2017 with the well-intentioned blanket resolution, be healthier. Not really a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-focused, and Time-bound) goal but it seemed strange to let go of the tradition of making those darn resolutions. Technically, I achieved that goal. I lost some weight, ate some veggies, and I have started working out (slow and steady wins the race).
This year is a little different…no impending deployment but we are unsure how long we’ll be in Virginia. The dreaded, picking orders time of military life. Yet, even without the hectic pace of last December/January, making resolutions seems daunting and based on Forbes information...useless.

Over the past month, I have launched my own business, Beach Bun, and I’m only four classes away from finishing my Master’s Degree. The upcoming year has the potential for a lot of change. Change can be scary but I must admit, I love it. If my husband gets orders outside of Virginia then we move and yeah, it could be an awful location like Djibouti but it could also be Washington state, Italy, Germany, or Spain. I love exploring, traveling, and new adventures.
Here’s what I am not doing in 2018….resolutions. Being happy is not found in resolutions, it is simply a state of mind. So to keep it simple, I'm just going to keep being happy!
