Hello Winter...
This morning I woke up to 16-degree weather in Virginia Beach. There is a winter storm moving into our area with the expectation of up to 6 inches of snow. As I sit here, shivering, I find myself desperately missing the 75-degree weather from a few weeks ago. I enjoy the changing seasons but I typically enjoy the Spring and Fall more than the extreme temperature of the Winter and Summer. Yet, here I sit wondering where my warm fuzzy socks are buried and dreaming of laying on a beach in some tropical location.
One of my favorite travel-related websites is Budget Travel because they offer great tips on travel and budget-friendly locations. Last month they published an article called “3 Warm Places to Escape Winter” and for the most part, I just skimmed through it. Today, however, I find myself reading it with determination and purpose. Where can I escape this bone-chilling cold without a price tag that only a Kardashian can afford? Budget Travel to the rescue with these three locations:
1. The Bahamas. With rooms for under $200 per night, the island of New Providence Island is a great pick. My first trip to the Bahamas was in 1994 with my Mom. It is the one and only trip I have taken when it was just my Mom and I. Being three months pregnant hindered any tropical alcohol drinks and the morning nausea was almost unbearable. The trip was still great. We ate conch fritters and the restaurant in the hotel made the best homemade cheesecake. Visiting the outdoor markets and eating fresh seafood would be a great way to spend a few days. Laying on a white sand beach and snorkeling with a 180° Full Face Snorkel Mask sounds like a perfect winter getaway.
2. Miami. Ok, I’ll have to admit that I have been to Miami and I was not all that impressed. Of course, it was during the summer and everything was crowded. According to Budget Travel, “While iconic South Beach may be lined with high-rise hotels and fashionable crowds to match, you’ll find a decidedly quieter side to Miami Beach at North Beach Open Space Park, a white-sand beach with picnic tables, a dog park, and the kind of peace and quiet you left home in search of.” With rates under $200 per night during the Winter, it may be worth loading up my Striped Beach Bag and taking another trip. Plus, a visit to Little Havana for a Cuban sandwich would be amazing right now.
3. Costa Rica. If eco-travel is your cup of tea then Costa Rica may be the answer. Budget Travel suggests that although Costa Rica is a popular location the nightly rate it under $150 in hotels like Radisson and Wyndham. Adventure is the watchword for a Costa Rican vacation. Situated between Nicaragua and Panama, Costa Rica offers hiking with a chance to see monkeys and tropical birds. So grab your Bamboo Sunglasses and book a flight!
