Top 5-"Day at the Beach" Must Haves

Ok...first of all, I will admit that I am guilty of taking too much stuff for a day at the beach. Over the years I have perfected my Mary Poppins or more currently the Hermoine Granger bag. I am able to pull from my magic bag anything that anyone might need today, tomorrow, or a month from now. Basically, I like to be prepared for ALL contingencies. This is an awesome trait to have on a road trip, at the park, or on a ball field. However, when you have to carry everything over hot sand, it's probably a good idea to pare down the list and bring only the necessities. So here are my top 5 items that are must-haves for a day at the Beach.  (On a side note: I will be shamelessly plugging items from the Beach Bun online shop by adding links. Just click on the link for more information about the product)

  1. Umbrella.  A good umbrella is important for a number of reasons. The first is obvious, it creates shade to help keep you from getting a sunburn. The umbrella helps with glare on your electronic devices if you're reading an eBook, keeps your drinks from boiling in the sun, and it allows you to stay a little longer on the beach in comfort. Umbrellas can be burdens though, you need one that is lightweight, covers a couple of chairs, and it needs to be anchored in the sand. Chasing a flying umbrella is not fun and slightly embarrassing (or so I've heard).
  2. Towel or Blanket- Obviously you need to dry off at some point so a towel can come in handy. A large towel or blanket can also be used to lay in the sun, have lunch, read, or play games with the family.
  3. Beach Bag- As I mentioned previously, I love a good bag! I need a place to keep my essentials like sunscreen and snacks. A beach bag with a built-in cooler for drinks is even better (click here for a beach bag/cooler combo)
  4. Sunglasses- Sunglasses are a must when spending time at the beach. The reflection off the water and sand can really do a number on your eyes. Protect them! Plus, you can totally scope out hot guys (or women) and no one will know (or so I've been told).
  5. Books! We talked about beach reads a little bit last week. I love a good book at the beach. The sound of the waves, the heat from the sun, and a great story to read are the ingredients for a perfect day. (Click on the ebooks link to the left of the screen for some great beach reads!)

One last thing, let me be a Mom for a moment. WEAR SUNSCREEN! I did not put it on my list because I think of sunscreen as a no-brainer. Wear it or don't complain when you get blistered...no one wants to hear it!

Now it's your turn, what are your must-haves? Post your answers in the comments below.
